What is the difference between Pentium M and AMD 64 processors?

I've been looking at getting a new computer and the sales reps at these don't know much. I know that they are separate companies that produce processors but I wanted to know what is this difference. My current computer has a Pentium 4 and I'm leaning towards the Pentium but I've also heard that that AMD is just as good.

2. if it has the M it means its a designed as a mobile processor for laptops and other such devices. since on laptops u can now get a Intel P4 dual Core duo. and AMD has the AMD 64bit x2 Turion if you get a laptop with 1 of these processors u wil not need to upgrade. for a long long time and will set u back close atleast starting prices of about £1500, or about $2200
3. If it is for a notebook buy Pentium M. They are just better. So is the Core Duo. For a PC however the story is different. If it is between Pentium 4 and AMD Athlon... then buy AMD Athlon. Pentium 4 chips run too hot and are not as fast. Intel admits that they made a mistake with Pentium 4, so they pretty much are telling you what to do!!! I would advise you wait about a month, or search online retailers since AMD made cuts in their CPU prices (50% or more) and thus their CPU's are an even better buy. Remember these prices will only effect people like Bestbuy and Circuit City in 1-3 months time as they try and get ride of their current stock, SO FIND YOUR PC ONLINE from someone like www.newegg.com or www.hp.com in about 2-3 weeks time. The CPU that is the best $ value-performace wise is the AMD 4600+.
4. I would get an AMD 64. Pentium M is a laptop processor and therefore does not run as fast as the AMD. AMD 64 have better architecture and they are 64bit (Pentium M is not 64bit) which means it can transport data twice as fast a the Pentium M. Just do you self a favor and go with the AMD.
5. The architecture is fundamentally different. If you can, get a Core 2 Duo CPU but if not, then a A64 FX or X2-series CPU. If not that go for a Pentium D. (Basically a P4 but 2 cores). If you can't, get a A64. If you can't get that get a P4. If not that, then a Sempron. If not that then a Celeron. The Pentium M is only for laptops, but it has a similar clock speed to performance ratio with the A64 series and the upcoming Core 2 Duo and the current mobile Core Solo or Duo CPUs.
